Works for what is intended for

This is a very strong, wide clip. I can attach it to a thick drawing board, or to a thin piece of elastic sewn against the back wall of a travel art box.The file is nice. I can get a good point on graphite and charcoal pencils. I don't know if the Evolve art school is still doing charcoal, or if they went to paint only, but if they are, for the charcoal lessons, when Kevin says you need to keep a sharp point, this does a great job of it. I was a year one student, and still do work in that style.For a soft graphite pencil, like a 10B, this can get to a sharp point, which I have trouble doing with a sharpener without the point breaking.I used it to get some powdered charcoal from a stick. While yes, it's messy, charcoal is always messy. I didn't do a lot at a time because I was worried about the charcoal flying everywhere, but this contains the collected powdered in the bottom cup and on the file well enough I could remove it with a paint brush, and I didn't have much trouble getting it clean afterwards. By the end, I was able to chisel a stick to a flat edge on one side with this. It's very good for smoothing the jagged edge of a broken peice of vine or willow charcoal.

Easy to use and transport; but it's also a great way to create "pencil dust" for blending. Rub your pencil on the metal grate and collect the pencil dust with your finger, or a cotton swab for blending.Grind a water soluble colored pencil or ws-graphite pencil and pick up the dust with a paintbrush....or tip dust onto a palette.....to blend with water.

What a great way to quickly make a nice point on my pencils. This thing works best on a thicker drawing board. It grabs my thinner 1/4 inch board but wiggles left and right. I'll have to put a thick piece or wood, rubber, or Styrofoam in there to fix this. But I like it.
